Not for eating DIY
Rae’s Rubs Eczema Lotion
Rae’s Rubs is made with eczema-prone skin in mind. Colloidal oatmeal and oat extract go in for soothing, with butters and almond oil for a rich barrier. Poured into push-up tubes or jars.
Makes
923 g
- Equipment
- double boiler · kitchen scale · cardboard push-up tubes or jars · hand or stand mixer (whipped version)
Instructions
- Melt. Melt the beeswax, mango butter, shea butter, and almond oil together in a double boiler.
- Off the heat. Remove from the heat, add the arrowroot and colloidal oatmeal, and let cool for a few minutes, until slightly thickened but still pourable.
- Finish and pour. Add the vitamin E, oat extract, and essential oil, and pour into cardboard push-up tubes or jars.
Containers

The base recipe works great poured into cardboard push-up tubes, so it goes on like a stick and is easy to apply. The whipped version is best in jars.
Variation: Whipped
For a lighter, fluffier lotion that spoons out of the jar:
- Cool until it starts to set. Make steps 1 and 2, then let the mixture cool until it turns opaque and firms up around the edges but is still soft in the middle. The fridge speeds this up; check every 10 minutes.
- Whip. Add the vitamin E, oat extract, and essential oil, then whip with a hand or stand mixer until light and fluffy, about 5–10 minutes.
- Jar it. Spoon into jars instead of pouring.
Notes
- Not for eating. This is for skin, not food.
- Made with eczema-prone skin in mind, but it’s a moisturizer, not a treatment. Check with a doctor about flare-ups.
- Fragrance, including essential oils, can bother sensitive skin. Leave the essential oil out for the most sensitive skin.
- Contains almond oil, a tree nut. Skip it or swap the oil if anyone has a nut allergy.
- Patch-test on a small area of skin first.
- The essential oil is about 0.5% of the batch.
